3×3 (Perc. Trio)
Rehearsal suggestions
-The tempo of this work is critical to its character. When planning your preparation, make sure to allow time for proper technical development to achieve the written tempos, lest the work come off as “boring.”
-Instruments should be arranged so that the highest pitched instrument is on the player’s right, middle in the center, and lowest on the left. For the percussion 1 part, I would recommend a mounted cowbell slightly higher than the snare drum and almost directly in front of them, with the suspended cymbal slightly to their right. However, feel free to experiment and see what works best.

3×3 is a percussion ensemble for young players written as a fast scherzo. The title comes from the fact that it is a work for 3 players with 3 instruments each (clever, no?). Beyond this, it is purely an abstract work with no story or central idea; it is simply intended to provide a fun introduction to scherzo style for young percussionists.
Since we have some space in the Program Notes because the description was so succinct, how about some percussion jokes?
How did the drummer sell his pillows? Per cushion.
My son broke his drum set, and now wants me to buy him another one. There will be serious re-percussions.
A mom asks her child “what do you want to be when you grow up?”
“A percussionist,” the child proudly replies.
“Well,” says the mother, “you can’t have it both ways.”
