Program Notes:
The Foggy Dew is a traditional Irish folk song that tells of a battle in which many men march off to fight, but few return. This arrangement opens with the orchestra stomping and knocking on their instruments, evoking the sound of an army marching into town. The violas then introduce the main melody over a bass drone, suggesting a solo Irish tenor singing the song.
The melody passes to the violins with more lyrical harmonies, though rhythmic tension and dissonance continue to hint at the coming conflict. After two verses, the stomping returns as the army marches toward the battlefield. A brief, dramatic pause leads into the battle itself, marked by a shift to 6/8 and an original section of music. This battle music follows an AABA form before abruptly breaking off and returning to the opening bass drone.
The “Foggy Dew” melody reappears, reflecting on the aftermath of the battle. In this final statement, echoes of the battle music mingle with the weary footsteps of the returning soldiers. The piece builds to one last dissonant moment before ending with a lone solo viola, concluding the tale.
