Superstitious - Randall Standridge

Dive into the world of mystery, luck, and lore with Superstitious!, an all-new developing band production by Randall Standridge and Mo Longo. Designed with flexible scoring, optional narration, and sound FX, this show gives your ensemble an exciting and theatrical exploration of some of the most iconic superstitions. Subtle musical nods to the number 13 appear throughout the score, adding an extra layer of fun for performers and audiences alike.

The show opens with 13 LADDERS, a fast-paced and harmonically eerie introduction that sets a suspenseful tone while showcasing crisp ensemble moments and attention-grabbing percussion writing. Movement two, THE BLACK CAT, shifts to a sly, jazzy groove and features a standout soloist weaving through playful lines and smooth textures. The production concludes with BROKEN MIRRORS, an energetic finale that builds toward a memorable moment where the full ensemble uses wooden objects to literally “knock on wood” before a powerful final impact.

This show offers plenty of opportunities for general effect. Consider using ladders or archways in the opener to create bold field images, shadowy or feline-inspired movement during THE BLACK CAT, or reflective props and shattered-mirror patterns in the closer. Sudden changes in direction, asymmetrical drill forms, and moments of stillness followed by sharp motion can all reinforce the theme of unpredictable luck. Scored to sound confident and full with bands of any size, Superstitious! delivers a fun, spooky, and competitive-ready experience that students will love performing and audiences won’t forget.

This show is written in our "Developing Band" format, which features optional careful attention to range demand, melody lines transposed for all instruments, optional low brass bass doubles, limited sideline percussion, and cueing on all electronic elements.
