Jumping Joeys (A Marsupial March)
Jumping Joeys (A Marsupial March) - Randall Standridge
Randall Standridge brings humor and lighthearted charm to the beginning band stage with Jumping Joey’s (A Marsupial March). Set in 4/4 time and in B♭ major, this Grade .5 march introduces young players to traditional march style while helping them develop confidence with melodic leaps.
Trombone glissandi, slide whistles, and playful percussion writing add a sense of whimsy and fun, while melodic moments are shared throughout the ensemble to keep everyone engaged. An optional, easier snare drum part ensures accessibility for developing percussionists. Both educational and entertaining, Jumping Joeys is a delightful choice for concert or festival performance.

In 2024, I was invited to spend a couple of weeks in Australia. I was fortunate enough to spend time in Perth and Brisbane, and to say that I loved it would be the understatement of the century. If I had my way, I would move there tomorrow.
Of course, the country itself is absolutely beautiful and incredibly interesting, but the people of Australia are its real treasure. In my short time there, I made friendships that I know will last a lifetime, and I had a marvelous time making music and memories. This piece is my small and undoubtedly inadequate tribute to my new friends on the other side of the globe.
Jumping Joeys (A Marsupial March) is a light-hearted march for young band that depicts a group of baby kangaroos frolicking in the outback. Their “jumping” is represented through melodic leaps, slide whistle effects, and trombone glissandi, with each landing often punctuated by bass drum or timpani.
As a side note, I did get to pet a kangaroo during my visit. They are very soft, very beautiful… and more than a little intimidating.
Peace, Love, and Music… and good on ya, mate - Randall
